As part of the European Day celebrations, the municipality of Oudergem, in collaboration with the European Movement and JEF Belgium, organised a conference on the theme “The European Union: rising power or fragile giant?”.

The war in Ukraine and the election of Donald Trump raised questions about the strategic autonomy of the European Union. A strong and united EU was considered essential to ensure economic stability, defend democratic values and tackle international crises. Strengthening European integration was highlighted during the conference as an important lever for addressing global challenges, particularly in the areas of security, energy transition and the balance of international relations.

This public conference brought together Belgian and European speakers to analyse and discuss the driving forces behind European power in the 21st century.

Practical information

The conference took place on Friday 9 May from 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber (Emile Idiersstraat 12, 1160 Oudergem – 1st floor).
